Vince Carter: EDITORIAL
Years from now, hoop heads all over the globe will
be trading experiences, stories and recollections
of their favourite Vince Carter highlight.
Every argument in basketball is just. Every list
created can be viewed as subjective and every claim
at “who is the best this” or “who’s
better at that” is legitimate. Every argument
is open for debate, bar one: the argument that involves
Vince Carter and the subject of dunking. Not everyone
was a Michael Jordan fan. While he is respected,
feared and honoured by most, there are always those
who decided to follow alternate players, either
because they loved hoops prior to Mike, and thus
never bought into his individual exploits, or they
simply liked to barrack for an underdog, yet not
a single person, not one, can not say that Vince
Carter is the greatest dunker of all time.
It’s fair to say that Carter wouldn’t
be the icon he is without the legends who have paved
the way, long before he ever picked up a ball. Dr
J, Clyde The Glide, Jordan and Wilkins all played
a part in the creation of VC. Vince’s aerial
arsenal is the combination of every dunker from
Dr. J to Jordan; from Harold Miner to Shawn Kemp;
from the Globetrotters to all the high flyers in
gyms and on the streets whose names will never be
household. Carter, more so than any other player
to ever play the game, demonstrates the unlimited
possibilities of human creativity with regards to
the slam dunk. That is his gift to the world. He
is basketball’s greatest showcase.
Vince reinvented the dunking wheel at the very
moment when fans believed they’d seen it all.
In every sport there is someone who inspires and
reminds us of what’s possible, and helps us
to discover that human beings can exist without
limitations or physical boundaries. In basketball,
that person is Vince Carter. – ED
